Visual aids for refractive conditions: Expansion of coverage scope for children in Spain
09 October 2025 | Country Update
Visual aids for refractive conditions were not included in the common benefits basket of the Spanish National Health System (SNS). On 9 October, the Ministry of Health issued a Royal Decree aiming at improving visual care coverage in children aged 16 and younger, ensuring egalitarian access. The measure provides a flat funding aid of up to €100 (VAT included) per person per year for visual aids such as glasses, contact lenses and maintenance products. The total budget allocated is €47.78 million, to be distributed between 2025 and 2026. The subsidy is deducted directly from the purchase price at the point of sale. To ensure consistent implementation across all regions, maintain appropriate quality standards in service provision and channel subsidies effectively to beneficiaries, the Council of the General Colleges of Optometrists of Spain will act as the collaborating entity in charge of refunding optical centres and services that apply the flat subsidies in their sales.
